The things that bring us joy

Recently some folks have unfriended me on facebook. And here I thought I was lovable and my cuteness would transcend politics. For the record I was very sad when Romney didn't win, but I never hated anyone who voted for Obama. I didn't unfriend anyone.....Not. One. Time.

The rejection should have meant nothing, but having someone say they didn't want to be friends caused me to feel like an insecure teenager.  So, I reacted like I did when I was an insecure teenager...I retreated to my books.

I decided to go through my book shelves in order to give some away, and maybe dust. Books I had already read and didn't love or didn't intend to read I put to the side. While making a pile of super giveaways one book in particular caught my attention and I had a strong impression to open it. I realized it had been a gift from my friend who recently passed away. Inside the cover she had written, "Look in chapter 3, I underlined the parts that reminded me of you." What an incredible gift from her for this sad day.  I don't know how long ago it was she gave the book to me but as I read through chapter 3 I noticed she underlined "noble individual" and "knowledge does away with darkness, suspense and doubt".  She had no idea that years after she wrote in this book I would find it at just the right time when I needed comfort, wisdom and love.

Once again my books did not let me down, not when I was an insecure teeenager and not today when I was an insecure adult. In their many forms books will be a purveyor of exactly what you need.

If Keahi were here today she would have said exactly what she did in the message from the book she gave me years ago.

My other touchstone, Valerie,  would remind me to focus on peace, as it is the only emotion that cannot be counterfeited.

We are never left alone so don't be afraid.

  2. Hi,
I have a post planned soon on negativity in blogging as a result of the U.S. election. I'm sorry that happened to you.

  3. As terrified as I was for an Obama presidency I never disrespected him or the office, ever.
Like you I never unfriended anyone, thought less of them and I always respected everyone's opinion.
What a rude awakening to not be given the same respect and what a horrifying example to our young women.I am appalled and doing my best to get out there to speak with young people aND teaching them that our elections are about winners and losers and we have an opportunity every 4-8 years to rebalance the country.
They must be listening because 3 major universities in my area resulted in 40 protesters the other night, including one of the most liberal universities in the country.

    1. A lot of great things have happened because of the strange backlash. I feel far more free to write what is in my heart without worrying any more what others think. I am going to do what I would have done if Mrs Clinton had won, I am going to get up tomorrow and go to work. Thank you for commenting...we are all going to be ok

  4. Hi Donna! I so agree that our country feels more divided that ever and that we all must try to find a way to reach across that divide for the good of our sanity and the future of our country. I so "get" what you mean by finding solace in your books. And I also believe "that which we are seeking, is seeking us." May be all find the peace we are looking to feel. ~Kathy

  5. I've 'unfriended' a few folks myself but it was because of their nastiness, not because of who they voted for (for whom they voted?). LOL I wrote a post titled, My Message to Mean People. I did not vote for Trump but I have a few nasty friends who did. I'm not sure why they have to be nasty about it.

  7. I understand that it might sting a bit to be unfriended - especially if they were nasty and sent a note doing so. It's uncalled for. But I didn't read that people were actually being nasty. They merely unfriended you on Facebook, yes?

I think we're missing being civil. That said, I do find it hypocritical to find those who voted for the president elect to want a civil discourse. His tweets are abhorrent, his comments on women despicable. His followers spewing racist rhetoric and supported by his cabinet choices. He calls for the cast of Hamilton to apologize but stays silent on Nazi supporters. And that is beyond his basic lack of constitutional and diplomatic knowledge.

I will have been happy with Romney in the White House. He's a decent human being despite our differences in many things. But the president elect is different. Romney vs Obama is not the same as Trump vs Clinton.

Thanks for hearing my side and always appreciate yours.

    1. You will always find a place for civil discourse on my porch, I never believe I am completely without blame, I probably bait people and i will not ever do that again. I don't want to be a part of antagonism., Thank you for stopping by, please come by again.
