I was bitten by a dog....

This morning I set off on my daily walk only thnking about how hot it was and why didn't I leave earlier, when about a zillion dogs came running out of the side yard of some house. One of them, the absolute ugliest one, was determined to make some kind of point on my being in his territory. And he bit me! I have been walking around here for 15 years...I have never been bitten...except once by a bee.

After I realized I was injured, I went to the door to find out if Cujo had his shots...no answer.

No answer! I am in pain... then I realized I had to walk all the way home with what appeared to be life altering wounds. (actually it is a bruise and 5 painful puncture marks - but for the sake of this blog and drama, I am calling it life altering wounds). The thought of walking all the way home in pain made me mad. But I made it after alerting every walker I came in contact with of this rabid dog, I also made them look at my wound.

My husband, the Italian, ( important note) went right over to their house after I told him what had happened. Please know, the dog had gotten bigger by now, and the wound more gaping, and the pain, excruciating. The dog owners....Bonnie and Clyde....were very apologetic. They assured my husband, the Italian, that Cujo had indeed had his shots and that he was some sort of heeler. Heeler? She went on to explain that heelers bite at the heels of cattle to herd them, and was I running?

Running? There is as much of a chance that I was walking by on my hands as I was running.

But evidently if it is in your DNA to have a particular behavior...it's OK to act badly. Ha!!!
DNA had nothing to do with this....this dog had never seen a cow...and I don't care what anyone says, I don't look like livestock.

So Cujo is confused, mean and now carrying around my DNA. I intend to whine and limp all day.

So y'all be careful out there, it's a dog eat dog world. Oh, and the dog in the picture may appear larger than he actually was...

  1. That horrible!! And I am sorry but..... awesome all at the same time!! Only you! Sorry. Actually....no Donna you don't resemble any livestock I have seen....but we had Heelers growing up...and had one that bit my dads heels the entire time we had her! Lol. We wore boots tho... I don't know why it is in their nature to do that...it is weird. Hope you are okay. Love ya, Verla

  4. I am the neighbor and I can attest to the severity of her wounds (wink, wink) I even provided emergency care - a washcloth and a doose of Hydrogen peroxide. And of course loving concern and advice. So glad you're going to survive this horrible incident! btw - you DO need to check in with the doctor...♥ ya, Girl!!

  5. Keep it really clean as dog bites are so prone to infection. Sorry that happened to you!

  6. You should have seen Claudia whirl into action when I knocked on her door and then theatrically collapsed on her porch. Everyone should have such a wonderful neighbor. Both of us have lost our moms so sometimes we just use each other for the maternal love...it's the best kind of "love your neighbor."

  7. Absolutely, keep it really clean. Watch it for infection. I was bitten by a dog a few years ago - 4 puncture wounds - and ended up having to have it debrided because I didn't go to the ER right away to have it cleaned out.

I'm so sorry you were bitten. Great post.

  9. So it was your fault? It's his nature, You were running, you were on his street. He's a heeler. You smell of steak? How reckless can you be. What are you walking in heels for anyway?

I thought everyone in Texas carried a gun.

  10. OOPS, my bad you dont live in Texas. Scratch the gun part. I guess in Vegas you just hoping the odds are in your favor you dont get bit.

  11. Make sure you make out a report with animal control. You don't want it to happen to someone else or even worse, you again! You won't have to talk to the dog owner again or anything, but if this dog tries it again, heaven forbid, bite number one is recorded. Especially if the owners just say sorry. No promise to keep the dog locked in a kennel? No reason the dog is running loose with a pack? I'm glad you will be OK, so sorry!

  13. Your blog is SO Fun!! I came over from another friends blog.
This same thing happened to my daughter when she was about 11 and it totally freaked me out. Dang dogs just like to chase people who run!
Glad it is not serious and you could find the owners.
BTW I am your newest follower!

  14. I was bit by a dog when I was a senior in high school. Pretty freaky. came up and nipped me in the buttoosky. But I also wanted to comment on the mad hatter picture from Disneyland. My daughter just turned 18 and her friends came and took her out and she had to wear that hat. ALSO, I know a young lady who plays Mickey. And she's pretty happy. = )

  15. This is horrible. I've had a fear of this ...I think about it every time I go walking.
So do you think you can do a follow up post on how you are now, how you treated your wound, etc. I'm very curious. And very sorry it happened in the first place :(

  16. Donna! The dog still should have been quarantined. Once we owned a psycho Dalmatian we adopted from the pound, and he bit the paperboy - didn't even puncture the skin, but we still had to throw him into solitary confinement for 10 days. (He did get visitation rights, and so we were able to pull off an intervention to try and help the poor thing.)

As for the paperboy, he recovered nicely and we upped the amount of his tip thrice fold.

    Take care!

  17. Oh my, that's awful! It's a good thing the dog had his shots. But you should also take some anti-rabies shots, just to make sure. Rabies is a dangerous disease, dear. But seriously, the name of the dog is Cujo? The monster dog from Stephen King's novel? He is one deadly dog, LOL! Get well soon!

  18. That’s really bad! And you did it right when you informed the dog owner right away about what happened to you. But I’m worried if Cujo haven’t had his shots; it could spell bad news for you. So, how are you now?

  19. It’s good that you only got nibbled. Otherwise, it can be hard to imagine what would happen next. Anyway, the sincere apology of the dog owner is highly appreciated. But I think it would have been better had they extended their regret to helping you with the medical needs. It’s never fun to be bitten by a dog, and have to suffer because of negligent owners.
